the inspiration, comte des cierges
Concierge was derived from the French, comte des cierges, the keeper of the candles. In feudal times, the comte des cierges was responsible for knowing where all of the functions in the palace would take place and was in charge of all events. Over time, the comte des cierge became the person who catered to every desire of the palace's visiting nobles; the personal concierge.
During the middle ages, the concierge was the keeper of the keys to all government buildings and castles. The concierge was known for having access to all places and handling all details. Today, the key remains a symbol for exclusive access and personal concierge service.
